Common Procedures

Our experienced and professional gynecology team can assist with a range of female health issues, and offer surgery should it be required. To find out more about just a select few of our treatments, continue reading below.

Colposcopy

In some cases during a pap smear, abnormal cells may be detected. If this is the case, you’ll need to have a colposcopy, which further examines the cervix, vagina, and vulva. A biopsy is usually taken for further investigation.

The biopsy is then observed to determine whether abnormal cells are present, which are commonly referred to as cervical intra-epithelial neoplasia (CIN) or cervical glandular intra-epithelial neoplasia (CGIN). If left untreated, these cells may develop into cancer. Therefore it’s essential that you have them removed. There are typically two forms of treatment to remove abnormal cells; LLETZ and a cone biopsy.

A large loop excision of the transformation zone (LLETZ) consists of removing the cells with a thin wire loop that is heated with an electrical current. Most patients only need a local anesthetic to numb their cervix for this procedure, which means you won’t be required to stay at hospital overnight.

A cone biopsy involves cutting out a cone-shaped piece of tissue with the abnormal cells from the cervix and is typically used if there is a large area to remove. This procedure is usually performed under general anesthetic and may require an overnight stay in the hospital to ensure you recover fully.

Urinary Incontinence

Urinary incontinence occurs when the normal process of storing and passing urine is disrupted, which can be both embarrassing and inconvenient. It can be caused by a variety of reasons, such as damage during childbirth, obesity or neurological conditions such as Parkinson’s disease or multiple sclerosis, and sometimes requires surgery to be resolved.

There are many ways to treat urinary incontinence, which varies depending on the severity and form. However, if the problem does not resolve after lifestyle changes, pelvic floor exercises and bladder training, you will need surgery. At Blue Tree Clinics, we provide a range of procedures, which aim to resolve the issue. These include tape procedures, colposuspension or sling procedures, or urethral bulking agents or an artificial urinary sphincter.

Ovarian Cysts

An ovarian cyst is a sac that develops in a woman’s ovary that is filled with fluid. In most cases, ovarian cysts occur naturally and disappear on their own without treatment. However, if a cyst is large or persistent, it will need to be surgically removed.

Ovarian cysts can be removed by either a laparoscopy, a form of keyhole surgery where small incisions are made, or a laparotomy which involves making a single large incision. The cyst will then be sent to a laboratory to determine whether it is cancerous. To ensure you recover as efficiently as possible, and that you are completely comfortable, you will need to stay in the hospital for a few days.
