What is PMS?

PMS encompasses both the physical and emotional symptoms that occur one to two weeks before a woman has her period. These symptoms typically disappear during and after your period, and the intensity of varies from woman to woman. While it is common for woman to experience some symptoms of PMS at some point, some find the syndrome debilitating and it can affect their daily life.

While there is no exact cause for PMS, symptoms can be worsened by factors such as a high salt diet, alcohol and caffeine, as well as stress and changes in hormone levels. PMS can therefore be controlled with lifestyle changes or, in more severe cases, medicine containing hormones, such as the oral contraceptive pill. It can also be managed with painkillers, such as ibuprofen, paracetamol or tranexamic acid for more painful cases.
