Disc Disorder

Disc disorder, or as it’s often referred to as ‘disc disease’, is characterised by radiating pain and, in some cases, weakness and numbness. Lower back and neck pain are among the most common complaints dealt with by our orthopedic team in Dubai and disc order is one of the leading causes.

Although the condition is caused by a degenerated disc, it is technically neither a degenerative disorder nor a disease. The word ‘degenerated’ applies to the way in which the disc gradually deteriorates with time. If left untreated, disc disorder can often lead to issues developing such as osteoarthritis, herniated discs or spinal stenosis.

If you’re experiencing difficulties with a disc disorder, pick up the phone and give Blue Tree Clinics a call today. We have many years of experience and a wealth of knowledge in dealing with a wide range of musculoskeletal issues. To find out more about what causes disc disorder and how we can treat it, read on below.

Causes

Disc degeneration is a process that occurs gradually as we grow older, so it should be of little surprise that disc disorder occurs most frequently with advanced age. Despite this, the nature and severity of a disc disorder can vary so not everyone will necessarily be affected in the same way. As we grow older, fluid between the discs is lost which reduces flexibility and causes the discs to become thinner.

Discs can also rupture, bulge or break entirely as a result of the nucleus being forced out through cracks and tears that can appear in the disc’s outer layer.

In addition to age, a disc disorder can also be caused by an acute injury. This is quite common among patients who participate in sports or have physically demanding jobs where there is a high possibility of a herniated disc occurring.

Treatment

For any disc disorder, it’s important to tailor the treatment to the particular needs of the patient. In order to do this, we provide each patient with a complete physical examination. During the examination, our orthopedic specialists in Dubai will check the range of motion within the affected area and make a note of any pain that is caused by such motion.

Additional tests will also be conducted to check for any underlying issues, for instance, fractures that might be responsible for the pain that the patient is experiencing. We will also check for any nerve-related issues as this could be a sign of nerve damage.

To provide a more conclusive picture, the orthopedist will also review your medical history. This will involve answering questions concerning subjects such as:

  • Symptoms
  • Injuries
  • Illnesses
  • Previous treatments
  • Work and hobbies

If all of the above proves inconclusive, Blue Tree Clinics are well-equipped to provide imaging tests such as x-rays and CT scans. While these usually don’t help provide a definitive diagnosis, they can be used to help determine if any nerve damage exists or to identify any symptoms following an injury. Once an accurate assessment has been completed, we will discuss the best approach to treating the disc disorder.

Often, a combination of physical therapy and exercise is sufficient enough to correct the problem outright. Such exercises are designed to strengthen and stretch the back providing much-needed relief in the process. In more serious cases, surgery may be considered. Here at Blue Tree Clinics, we are equipped to carry out a range of procedures from removing and replacing a damaged disc to fusing two or more vertebrae together.

All treatments will be carried out by our specialist team who will be happy to answer any questions that you might have.
