Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy refers to a cutting-edge non-operative treatment method that serves as an excellent alternative to normal injections. Unlike normal injections, PRP Therapy is persistent, promising long-lasting effects by promoting natural healing for a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions.

At Blue Tree Clinics, we promote the application of PRP Therapy to treat conditions such as tendonitis and arthritis. PRP Therapy is also ideally suited for treating torn ligaments as well as sprains making it a popular choice for athletes. What is PRP?

Quite simply, PRP is a technique that uses human blood which has been spun using a centrifuge. This process is intended to separate out the blood in order to produce a higher concentration of platelets. These platelets are then injected into the affected joints, ligaments or muscles where they promote the release of growth factors.

Platelets serve a crucial role in the body’s natural healing process. Reparative cells are attracted by PRP, and soft tissues can also be repaired and augmented leading to a faster recovery time and reduced pain overall. PRP Therapy also serves as an effective means of attracting stem cells to the site of the injury.

PRP Therapy in conjunction with stem cells is so effective that often the need for surgery can be negated. This makes PRP a fantastic choice for procedures such as rotator cuff repair, tendon repair, conditions related to the spine and much more.

The great thing about PRP Therapy is that it is a simple and painless procedure that delivers truly exceptional results. As with any consultation, we always start with a physical examination and will review your medical case history too in order to assess your suitability. If you’re a suitable candidate for PRP Therapy, one of our trained specialists will draw a small amount of blood – the process is no different to taking a blood test.

Once extracted, this blood is placed into a centrifuge which separates the red blood cells from the platelets – the red blood cells are discarded. Using ultrasound or x-ray guidance, the platelet serum is injected into the affected area – guidance is necessary to ensure that the serum is delivered to the correct site.

Depending on the severity of your condition, 2-6 injections may be required over a span of several weeks. Patients can usually expect to start noticing results in as little as 4-6 weeks following treatment.
