Neurodevelopment

Neurodevelopment is a specialised service in which a multi-disciplinary team assesses the neurological development of a child. These assessments are critical in diagnosing neurodevelopmental disorders such as Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Tourette’s Syndrome and Dyspraxia.

It’s not uncommon for children with said conditions to struggle, particularly in school. The purpose of Neurodevelopment is to recognise that these struggles are not always to do with learning disabilities or mental health concerns. Neurodevelopment highlights underlying issues and enables doctors and parents to support the child’s development. The emotional, social and physical well-being of the child are all taken into consideration.

What Causes Neurodevelopmental Disorders?

When you consider the development process of the body’s nervous system, it closely resembles a machine which works only when precisely tuned. Any deviation during the development of the nervous system can have far-reaching consequences. As a result, there are numerous factors which can cause neurodevelopmental disorders to occur, such as:

  • Deprivation (from social and emotional care)
  • Genetic Disorders (such as Down’s Syndrome)
  • Immune Dysfunction (such as Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal infection or PANDAS)
  • Infectious Disease (e.g. Measles which can lead to Subacute Sclerosing Panencephalitis)
  • Metabolic Disorders (in either the mother or child, such as Diabetes Mellitus)
  • Nutrition
  • Physical Trauma

How Can Blue Tree Clinics Help?

From pediatricians and clinical psychologists to speech and language therapists, our team consists of specialists who are required to assist with a child’s learning and development. They work with pre-school and school-age children and will provide a complete assessment and diagnosis to determine whether any neurodevelopmental disorders are present.

It is possible that more than one neurodevelopmental disorder might be present, and this might involve you consulting with more than one specialist. For instance, if ADHD and/or Tourette’s Syndrome are suspected, you will likely consult with one of our pediatricians. Once the assessment is complete, we will be able to create a structured programme designed to assist with the child’s development.

Our ultimate goal is to provide a service which helps to improve the life chances of the individual dramatically. This is done by devising methods to reduce or prevent mental health problems such as:

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Self-harming

By giving the child a fighting chance from the get-go, our team will ensure a happy and productive life. This can also help the family as a whole, as these situations can often place a great deal of strain on family members. In some cases, there can be a family, social or educational breakdown which can further impact the child. Our Neurodevelopment team are on hand to ensure that cases such as these are minimised and prevented.

We can provide you with the information and support you require as well as put you in touch with support groups who can provide further assistance. From talking and listening to your child to understanding their sensory needs and providing adequate emotional regulation, at Blue Tree Clinics, we’re here for you and your child from the very start.
